The best way to tie up loose ends before you resign is to make sure all of your projects are thorough and complete. It is a good thing to tie up these loose ends because you do not want to leave things up in the air when you are gone. It does not look good for you if you leave something incomplete because it looks like you didn't care.
Sometimes you leave a job for a better opportunity. What if this new job doesn't work out for you? What if the new job you absolutely hate and find out things were a lot better at the previous job? If you left things up in the air and incomplete at your old job, you most likely will not be able to go back there.
Another good tip is that if you know you are leaving, you should be more than willing to assist others in learning what you did at your job. Training others to do your job is good because your employer will know that there is someone who knows what you did and how you did it. Then they can rely on that person to pick up the work you did with no troubles until they find a replacement for you.
If you complete your unfinished projects and tie up loose ends at your job before you leave, you will probably get a better reference from them versus not finishing all of your tasks. It shows true dedication to a company when you do that.
