Get that raise: How to anticipate objections

Every employee, just like every person, has his or her strengths and weaknesses. When you are trying to get a raise, both of these personality aspects are on the table. The most important thing to keep in mind when anticipating objections from your boss about a raise is to be realistic.

Be prepared to offer your boss a list of what you have accomplished, highlighting your strengths much as you would for a job interview. The second, and more tricky part, is to anticipate that your boss is also likely to raise any issues that have come up since the last time you were evaluated. If you have a pattern of being late, for example, know that this is likely to be an issue that your boss will want to address. Do not make excuses for yourself. Instead, show how you are working to change your behavior. Better than anyone else, you are likely to know your boss's hot button issues, so be prepared.

More than being prepared to anticipate objections, be willing to compromise toward a solution. Using the same example, demonstrate to your boss that you are changing and offer to schedule another time in the not-too-distant future to meet and discuss those things that may be holding you back. Show, don't tell.

Recognize that you can compromise with money, time off, overtime, travel, and any other perks on thejob. Can't get the dollar amount you want? How about an extra day off? How about being allowed to go on the next travel assignment in the office? How about a better title (which costs nothing now, but can be parlayed into more responsibility and salary down the road)? Show your boss you can be flexible in your reward.

Finally, your attitude following a meeting like this says everything about you as a person. Try and make the most of every opportunity you are given. Show that you are a fighter and deserve a raise. Get rid of defensiveness and recognize that your boss is a human being who is more likely to change his or her mind when approached calmly, with good suggestions, and a positive attitude. Let your boss see just why you are a great employee!
