The currency of Germany

The currency of Germany is the euro; its banking code is EUR.

Germany was one of the original 12 nations that adopted the euro currency on January 1st, 2002.

(The other 11 were Belgium, Greece, Spain, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, and Finland. Slovenia adopted the euro currency on January 1st, 2007. 14 other nations are scheduled to adopt the euro currency within the next several years.)

Before adopting the euro, the currency of Germany was the Mark, and it was exchanged at the rate of 1.95583 to 1.

All the notes are the same throughout the euro zone, but each nation is represented on the reverse sides of the coins; these are called the national sides.

Germany's national sides include: the German oak twig, the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, and the federal eagle, the symbol of German sovereignty.

Euro coins with national sides are legal tender in all euro currency nations.
