Falling stars: Why we love watching celebrities crash and burn

Simple reason. We're all a bunch of jealous creeps. Since ancient times, idol worship has always included an element of evil in the congregation. In ancient Egypt, when a pharaoh died, they always buried alive a bunch of his most loving fans. Julie Caesar was the biggest, baddest dude in the world, but his jealous pals stabbed him so many times, Shakespeare wrote a whole play about it.

The most famous crash and burn case in history was the fate of Joan of Arc. She made a big star turn when she came off the farm and led the French army to defeat the English invaders. Instead of featuring her on the covers of all the fan mags, her French court pals first crashed her career in a mock trial, and then burned her at the stake.

In today's star firmament, we see so many of them get grossly overpaid, sickeningly preened and strutting every minute they bask in the loving public's spotlight. However, too soon they break up their own or others' marriages, go into rehab for the umpteenth time, make stupid press statements and show how really little actual talent to amuse us they have. Then we gleefully put up that execution pole and start collecting the firewood.

Oooh, and ain't it soooo much fun!
