In a recent book written by Steven pratt MD, he listed certain foods that are essential in maintaining brain health. The following is a brief discussion of some of these foods.
One cup of blueberries a day, helps to prevent the oxidative process in the brain. It also contains anti-aging elements as well, increasing learning and cognitive abilities. It may help conditions such as Alzheimer's.
Wild salmon is an excellent source of Omega 3 fatty acids. These acids are needed for brain function. Although other types of fish contain these acids, salmon is preferred for its abundance and lack of toxins. Four ounces, three or four times a week is recommended.
Nuts and seeds are high in Vitamin E. Vitamin E helps boost cognitive ability. Any type of nut, especially walnuts, peanuts, almonds and unsaturated nut butters provide this benefit. One ounce a day will do the trick.
Avocados, the new super food, contains mono-unsaturated fat, which is important for good circulation. They also lower blood pressure and the combination of these two benefits improves cognitive ability, reasoning and brain health. Due to its high fat content, a 1/2 to 1/4 piece of a whole avocado provides the desired benefit.
Whole grains improve cardiovascular health and blood circulation. Wheat Germ in particular contains some Omega 3 fatty acids as well as vitamin E. As you've seen above, all 3 are good for brain health and function. Two tablespoons of wheat germ or 1/2 cup of whole grain cereal is recommended.
Beans regulate glucose levels. The brain needs glucose to function. Since it doesn't store glucose it needs to be fed constantly. Beans provide this slow stream of energy. Eat 1/2 cup of beans daily.
Pomegranate Juice protects the brain from free radicals. The brain, which is most susceptible to this type of damage. Due to high sugar content in drinks, consumption should be limited to two ounces a day.
Green tea has antioxidants and caffeine, which stimulates focus, mood, memory and brain power. Drinking several cups a day will benefit greatly.
Dark chocolate, has powerful antioxidant properties. It contains stimulants that improve concentration and produces endorphins which improve mood. A half to 1 ounce a day will help
