Men: What to wear to camouflage a beer belly

Big is not always beautiful, especially when it comes to disguising a beer belly. Some men naturally assume that all they have to do is wear something big and baggy and no-one will guess they have a beer belly. However, that approach rarely works, and unfortunately, most times makes a guy look a lot bigger than he actually is. For any man on the large size, it can be very tempting to cover up in the hope that you won't draw attention to yourself. However, by adopting that approach you may just end up making yourself appear larger than you actually are.

Yards of billowing material will do little to create a sleek silhouette so don't be tempted to opt for this look. While it might seem obvious, always buy clothes that fit. This is especially important if you've got a big belly. And while a shirt three sizes too big will do little to flatter your physique, a shirt that's a little too snug-fitting won't do a lot to enhance your look either. In order to draw attention away from your beer belly, keep to simple lines and clothes that are a little loose, but still show your shape.

One trick is to wear a fine knit sweater layered over a tight t-shirt without ever having the need to remove the sweater. A v-necked sweater over a crew-neck t-shirt in contrasting colors can look good. Buy a longer fitting tee so that you get to see the bottom of it under the bottom of the jumper, this layered look will give the illusion of height thereby making you appear taller and slimmer. There should be a little "give" in the sweater so that instead of hugging your belly, it falls in soft creases around your middle. Another trick which works well in the summer is to wear a loose fitting summer shirt - linen is good - left un-tucked over a pair of casual trousers. Again, don't buy a size three times bigger than the size you actually need, as this will make you look bulky. Buy a size that leaves a bit of room so the shirt softly falls over your belly, and, if it's linen, again the material will create natural creases that will help disguise your girth.

When it comes to more formal wear, steer clear of tapered pants. Stick to flat-fronted trousers, as these are more slimming. Likewise, a single-breasted jacket will give you a more slimming appearance than a double-breasted one will (a double-breasted jacket will add bulk to your shape so is a "no-no" for a big man with a beer belly). If you can afford it, get a suit tailored to your specific shape, that way you can ensure that it not only fits perfectly, but that it's designed to camouflage your bulk. And if you can't afford a bespoke suit, then at least take advantage of the advice of the sales staff at the store where you buy your suit; they will be able to advise you on the best design for your particular shape.

Confidence has a lot to do with the impression a man makes on others. And dressing well helps a man's confidence. If you know you look good then you should be able to walk tall with your head up and your shoulders back, so others will get to see that there's a lot more to you than just your beer belly.
