Celebrity news is not news! Is anyone really affected by the latest celebrity argument, or the newest couple? No matter what Brittany Spears does to her EW56B../../undefined/items/286 262-celebrities-why-were-compl etely-sick-of-celebrity-newsWH 6PDZ6EFPhair, it still doesn't interest me.

We are sick of celebrity news because it does not matter. With all the things going on in our world today, there are more newsworthy stories than the lives of celebrities. News stations could spend their airtime discussing the war, economy, or local news. These topics are much more important than the latest Brangelina update. Originally, news was aimed at informing and educating the public.

Unfortunately the trend in journalism has moved away from hard news towards soft news or entertainment. Entertainment news that used to fill almost no time in a broadcast now has an entire section in the newspaper and entire television programs devoted to it. With so much time dedicated to entertainment news the threshold for 'news' and 'fame' has dropped considerably. The antics of the Paris Hiltons of the world are a perfect example (think of every reality TV star you have ever heard of). If anyone can come up with a noteworthy reason why Paris is famous, beyond being rich, please step forward. Even without passing the 'fame' test Paris has her own TV shows, is a constant headliner in celebrity shows and tabloids and in perhaps her classiest move ever, even released an ad during the campaigning for the 2009 presidential election in response to McCain's references to her in his campaign ads. This leaves some of us questioning why Paris Hilton's voice is more worthy of being heard than the views of anyone else.

Problems with celebrity news are twofold; what we see and what we don't see. What we see is a horrible example for our children and an embarrassment to everyone else. Whether it's Paris getting a DUI, Hasselhoff trying to eat a burger or Andrew 'pacman' Jones in his latest altercation at a strip club, celebrities are typically in the news when setting a bad example. Children see their idols making poor decisions, not taking responsibility and few repercussions for serious infractions.

Whenever a news organization decides to a celebrity news story something else must be cut. Instead of learning about current events or important issues viewers hear about the latest antics of some Hollywood party girl or the most recent pro athlete to find his/her way into 'under the counter' drugs. What used to be a valuable source of information has turned into an endless stream of off the set celeb worship.

Some celebrities do use their public podium for important topics. Occasionally a celebrity will promote raising money to research a disease, for a worthy foundation or encourage political participation; however, the majority of celebrities are on the news for making fools of themselves.
