With most of the country either overweight and obese, the plus-sized woman has become an icon for fashionable clothing. Though there are many stores like Lane Bryant and Avenue who sell clothes specifically for the plus-sized woman, even chain stores like Old Navy and Target are providing a larger range of women's sizes. The plus-sized girl no longer needs to hide herself in long t-shirts and tacky dresses that cover too much skin.
They key to flattering fashion for a plus-sized woman is the same as for any other woman: accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative! If you carry most of your weight on the bottom, wear boot-cut jeans which will give a more slimming torso and tuck in that rear a bit. Also go for dark colored bottoms, especially when it comes to jeans. A great color for plus-sized girls is indigo. Slightly flared jeans also take away the focus from your belly or behind, but too flared may look goofy. Old Navy has a great selection of bottoms for plus-sized girls.
Most tops look great on a plus-sized girl, except those that are too tight or show midriff. Stick to t-shirts that are a bit longer so you don't have to worry about your belly showing every time you move your arms. Avoid shirts that are "busy" or in loud colors which might appear to flatten your chest and widen your waste. If you choose to wear a tube top, wear a nice cardigan to avoid a heavy look around your arms and chest. One of the most flattering cuts for a plus-sized woman is the wrap-cut shirt, which puts focus on your "better assets" up top! Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to avoid horizontal stripes all-together, just the wide ones! Small horizontal strips of contrasting colors are great for daily wear, in addition to your solids and basic prints.
Don't be disappointed that Spring's hottest new looks are cute sundresses and flowy skirts! Plus sized girls look great in both of these hip fashions! Just make sure neither is too short, avoid loud patterns, and if you're going for the sleeveless look, choose tank tops with wider straps to bring attention away from your arms and onto your neck and chest. When wearing a skirt or dress, wear a shoe with a heel to make your legs look longer and slimmer. It doesn't have to be a stiletto, wedges or espadrilles will do the trick.
If you're looking for formal wear, David's Bridal has a beautiful line of plus-sized wedding gowns and party dresses. For businesswear, check out Avenue.com.
