In the same way that we can not take our eyes off a car accident when we are driving by it on the highway we can not seem to divert our attention from a celebrity that is falling from grace. When a celebrity makes a mistake it makes headlines. When they mess up we want to know everything about it, all the details. Why do we love to watch celebrites fall on their face? I think, it makes us feel better about our lives. It reminds us that celebrites do not have a perfect life which we often imagine them having. It can also make our problems seem a bit smaller because when celebrities make a mistake it is big and it is public.
When a celebrity is in a downward spiral we watch with facination as they plumet. Take for example Brittney Spears. We were glued to our TVs waiting for the latest update on her crazy antics when she was going through her very public breakdown. From shaving her head to saying weird things to the paparazzi every moment was captured and we could not wait to see the new photos and hear what she was doing now. When we knew she was going to be on a show we tuned in to see how she was going to behave. Would she be normal or would she act out again? Her performance at the MTV Video awards was memorable not because she did such a great job but becasue she bombed, big time! She seemed out of it and the media spent many hours disceting her performance and trying to figure out why exactly did she behave the way she did. Was she on drugs, sleep deprived, depressed? Many theories were thrown around and we sat there eagerly eating up the gossip. We could not get enough Brittney updates.
Our cutlure idolizes celebrities. We watch their every move, analyze who they have lunch with, what they are wearing, where they go on vacation. We are obsessed with them. We are envious of them. Many of us would love to be living their lives, minus the public spotlight. Celebrities have the money and the means to do what many of us will only ever be able to dream about doing. They seem to have it all. For this reason when they fall it shocks and intrigues us. They are normal human beings just like the rest of us but we often forget that because we put them up on a pedestal. They are bound to make a mistake or do something incredibly stupid. But unfortunately for them, it is usually caught on tape and can then be replayed for the world to see over and over again.
We love watching celebrities crash. It may make us feel better about ourselves or grateful we are not in that same situation.
We have a sick facination with car accidents, plane crashes and the like. Whenever something crashes and burns we can not get enough information about it. We want to know what happened, why did it happen etc ... Just think about how many traffic jams you have been stuck in that were caused by people trying to get a look at a car accident that has been pushed over to the side. Sometimes it is not even an accident but a cop has pulled someone over for speeding, still drivers slow down and crain their necks to see if they can see something wrong. Was that an accident? It is the same with celebrities when they fall. We can not for some weird reason get enough.
