A look at how the Detroit Lions can improve their game

Being born and raised in the D I am a Detroit Lions fan for worst or for worst! I have heard stories about the glory days and have in fact read about them but that is as close to glory as I have gotten with the D-town Kitties. You could say we were close in the Barry daze but one playoff win isn't all that glorious. Although Barry himself was arguably the best runner this game has ever seen so if nothing else in those daze at least we had hope.

With past behind us where it should be and the hope soon to follow lets move forward and get down to what this team really needs. Anyone who has ever played or studied this game will tell you... this game is won in the trenches. That being said we need to build an offensive line that can actually open holes for our backs, give our receivers time to run their routes, and give our QB Jon Kitna the protection he needs. Barry Sanders was recently quoted as saying just that. He said it all starts up front and I for one agree with him. We should build this line but it's hard to pass up the big time players like Georgia Tech's WR Calvin Johnson. Sometimes however you have to make those tough decisions in business. I would like to see the Lions draft Wisconsin's Joe Thomas but there are a couple other tackles rated fairly high after Thomas that make make it possible to take Johnson with the second pick and still add some quality to the line for instance Penn State's Levi Brown and Central Michigan's Joe Staley. Now all those people who doubt Kitna need to step back and reevaluate him... look at what he did last year being one of the most sacked QB's in the NFL. He still passed for over four thousand yards, just imagine what he could do with some protection.

So with the up coming draft I will be watching with much anticipation to see what the M&M&M boys do with it. They have had a pretty productive off season thus far making what seem to good additions to the roster and hopefully they can keep things going in the right direction. The last ingredient in the recipe for Glory is for the guys on this roster to get with the thinking that Marinelli is trying to instill here. He is trying to make these guys take responsibility and be accountable for what goes on with this team. He has his doubters but I for one and I'm sure all the fans in the D would agree... I hope he succeeds were many have failed.
