Asking for a raise can be intimidating, and if the answer is no you may feel dejected and angry. You may feel that the company must not understand how valuable you are to them. But, if you handle the situation well you can increase your chances of getting a raise in the near future.

There are different reasons why your boss would deny you a raise. It could be that the company is in a salary freeze, with the economy not doing well right now many companies have forzen salaries and are not giving raises to anyone until things get a bit better. Or it could be that you are not performing at the level that your boss would like.

When you are told no, do not get defensive and start listing off all the magnificent things you have done. Politely ask your boss to explain why he said no. And ask questions until you get a complete understanding of what exactly the reason is. It is important to have the details not just a vauge idea of why you are not getting a raise. In those cases where it is not your fault but the company is just not able to give out raises at the moment there is not much you can do but wait out the salary freeze.

However, if you are not given a raise due to your work not being up to par there are things you can do to change this. Ask your boss specific questions about what areas exactly need improving and ask him how he would suggest you could improve. Are there classes you could take, additional training, etc ... Showing your boss that you are willing to do better will leave a positive impression. Throwing a temper tantrum will not win him over. Once you hear his reasons, the next step is to follow through. Make the changes he suggested and improve your work. This will definitely get noticed. Ask your boss to get together with you in a month to review your progress and give you some feedback about whether you are doing better or still the same. This will make a great impression on your boss and chances are once you start improving your boss will be willing to give you that raise.

Do not bad mouth your boss or gossip about the situation with your coworkers. This could create a hostile environment and it will get back to your boss what you said. Having a bad attitude about not getting a raise is not going to help. If you handle the situation with maturity and improve your work chances are good your boss will notice and will give you that raise you asked for.
