People go to the gym for many reasons, and not all of them have to do with getting proper exercise, which in my estimation, is the only right reason one would go to such a place. Memberships to these facilities can be very expensive; to go for the wrong reason can do more harm than good.
The top mistake any person can make at a gym is to treat such a place as a social gathering. Many people do just that, and you can easily spot who they are the moment they walk in. When you go to the gym to enjoy social hour, you are constantly interrupting those who are there on a limited amount of time, and those who are serious about attaining their peak physical condition. Furthermore, you do yourself a disservice, as paying for the right to use all of that high tech equipment is wasted while one is busy gossiping about local people.
The second mistake people make is thinking that everybody is watching them. I don't know what it is, but we seem to have this idea that we are on stage, and the world records our every move. As we perform for the crowd, we lose focus on our workout, and actually put ourselves in danger of injury. Exercise, as with any physical activity that utilizes concentration of certain muscle groups, is not something you do while your attention is elsewhere, and if you are focused on how you look while you workout, your attention is definitely misplaced. Not only can that lead to injury; it also leads to an unfocused and therefore unorganized routine. If there is no plan for what you desire to achieve, you won't achieve much of anything.
The final big blunder made at gyms is joining and entering upon a cycle of exercise that you are not dedicated to. So many people start quickly, committing hours on end the first few days to their new regimen, only to see it fall by the wayside as life's other concerns take center stage. A commitment to a personal plan involves an unwavering dedication. That means there are no excuses that are good enough today to miss the workout. If you have committed, you'll find reasons to show up. Those who haven't committed will find reasons not to. In the end, an uncommitted regimen is a regimen that is wasted. Starting and stopping a physical workout plan leaves you constantly stuck at the beginning, where results are impossible to gauge.
We all want results; that's why we exercise. If you aren't seeing results, you won't stay committed. But the problem is, the commitment must come before the results. If you know this upon entering, you'll be patient enough to reap the rewards, and those rewards are substantial. Enjoy your workout!
