The Knifty Knitter is a set of four round plastic looms in different sizes that come with a hook and a plastic yarn needle. Provo Craft makes it. They also make rectangular looms in various sizes. Provo Craft describes the Knifty Knitter as being for those who don't know how to knit. I knit, I crochet, but I also like making things on the Knifty Knitter, as it gives a different look.
I first learned to knit with needles when I was 17 years old, from a friend's Mom in high school. Then I took a crocheting class. More recently, I taught both knitting with needles and the Knifty Knitter at a retail craft store that I worked at. In a few cases I had students who just couldn't get anywhere with the knitting needles, so I would switch to the Knifty Knitter. Soon their frustration with the knitting needles disappeared. In no time at all they were on their way to making wonderful wearable items, and fun things as well. Kids can make things on the Knifty Knitter and the elderly seem to enjoy using it as well.
I found it more challenging to teach left-handed people how to knit with needles. Many lefties have had to adapt to learning things right handed, as there still aren't enough products designed specifically for left-handed people. The nice thing about the Knifty Knitter is it doesn't differentiate between right handed and left handed people. It's just as easy for lefties to use the Knifty Knitter as it is for right-handed people.
With the Knifty Knitter, it's simply a matter of wrapping the yarn around the pegs, for a different amount of rows. Then taking the hook and bringing the bottom loop or loops up over the top loops on the peg. It's also good for those who have arthritis because knitting with needles or grasping a crochet hook can be difficult for them to use for any length of time.
Not only can you make hats, slippers, even mittens, or anything in a tube shape on the Knifty Knitter but you can also use the round looms to make flat rectangular pieces. Instead of going around the loom wrapping every peg with yarn, you just work back and forth along a certain number of pegs on the round looms. The rectangular looms also have different stitches that can be used with them, producing items that look knitted, on both sides.
So far, I've made hats, scarves, a shawl, slippers, and other items. Some people feel they can make a hat faster on the Knifty Knitter than by doing it with traditional knitting or crocheting. This is helpful for those who like to make preemie
