Nothing quite beats being a capitalist on a rainy day or rather playing a game of Monopoly. Wonderful childhood memories flood back every time I see the little gray scotch terrier dog token.
It was a wet day ritual in our neighborhood; everyone would turn up at our house, all with the hope of beating my younger brother, the Monopoly champion, who rarely lost a game.
One particular wet summer holiday, we continued the same game for 4 days. Alliances were made and broken, cupboards were raided for food and drink and at times tempers frayed.
However it still ended with my brother winning even though like a Phoenix he rose from the ashes of bankruptcy more than we thought were humanly possible. His business acumen as an adult we still credit to his winning streak of Monopoly.
Now we're adults with children of our own. But at times like Christmas when we're altogether and there's a sign of rain, it's Monopoly that my nephews demand. Over the rainy days that they've played it with my brother, he's relinquished his winning title to his oldest son.
The retelling of stories of Monopoly games we played as children have become family legends. We retell of the Game where we were rained in for 4 days as if it were a historic battle. Of course with as much embellishment as any old soldier recounting the glory days.
Now my children are old enough to play Monopoly, but not only on rainy days. We play Junior monopoly and Disney Princess monopoly which at first I considered somewhat blasphemous how could it be Monopoly without Park Lane and Mayfair?
But my kids love it and regardless of what's on the board, it's a great game. The only problem is my daughter seems to have taken up where my brother left off. Sadly I can't win a game in my own house so I'll wait for the next rainy day. Maybe that's what's so good about Monopoly it gives us hope
