Communicating with narcissists

How you communicate with and to a narcissist depends on what position they have in your company and the subject matter that needs to be conveyed.

If you need your narcissist to participate in a project, they will want to know why they should care about it. Try to figure out how their participation will benefit them. Flattery is a must (John, you're so clever), and dangle goals with abandon (I hear Mr. Boss is paying extra attention to the results of this project, and he's been looking for the right replacement for Mr. Higher-than-you).

If your narcissist wants something from you however, flattery will only make them think that you're agreeing with them. I knew one that you could yell at him that no, you didn't agree, and days later he'd say "but we agreed". Narcissists tend to not listen to what other people say and you need to be as blunt as possible to get your point across.

Try communicating in writing as much as possible- it helps to prevent their sidetracking the conversation, and you have proof that you never agreed to or that they did agree to whatever the conversation was about.
