As a kid with a short attention span, it's sometimes difficult to find games that you can play for a really long time without getting really bored of it. Connect Four was one of those games that was fun to play against someone for a long, and it's a game that is still fun. Connect Four was always one of my favorite games growing up, and for a couple reasons it was always very popular.
For one thing, it's extremely easy to learn. Basically all you have to know is that you need to get 4 pieces in a row (hence, Connect Four is the name of the game)... whether horizontal, vertical, or diagonal. Those are basically the rules of the game. You can teach someone new to play in a minute or two, so the quick learning curve makes it easy to find opponents. No matter what age you are, you'll be able to pick up on the nuances of the game in short order, which means you won't be at a disadvantage if you are just learning the game. This makes the game fun for beginners as well as people that have been playing the game for a while.
Another fun thing is that there are different strategies you can try, and different strategies will work out differently depending on the type of strategy employed by your opponent. If you want to start in the middle, start at the side, go for the diagonal, etc. You can try out new strategies all the time and see what works best for you and against your opponent. Because of this each game is always a little bit different, which breaks up the monotony of playing a lot of really quick games.
Lastly, the competition involved is nice. Hopefully you're not going to get too competitive over a game of Connect Four, but that little 1-on-1 action makes things more fun and interesting. It's a lot more fun to play games with others rather than playing games all by yourself, so the fact that it's a 2-player game adds to the fun. This is especially good for kids, because they can play it with all of their friends.
So the game is fun, different all the time (despite the relatively easy goal of getting four in a row), easy to learn, and it doesn't take very long to play a game. Definitely a great game to play no matter what age you are.
