Choosing a great name for your business should not be taken lightly. The right name (with a well-researched business idea) can go a far way in creating an everlasting brand. Also, bear in mind that the registration of a business name in today's digital age has two components; (1) Registration with local, state or federal government and (2) Registration of the Internet domain name version of the business name. Here are a few tips to bear in mind:
* Think about and make a comprehensive list of possible names with simple criteria for choosing the names;
* Research has shown the shorter the name, the better;
* One word names that are spelt and pronounced easily, offer great branding possibilities and are ideal;
* These days, an online business strategy is just as critical as your "offline" strategy. Think about company names that fit the plethora of domain extensions out there; but even more importantly, check with domain registries or resellers (www.GoDaddy.com, www.Jollyjo.com) if the business names along with the domain extensions are available;
* If you are hooked on a particular name, very likely the name along with the Dot-Com has been taken. In such a case, consider purchasing the name on the secondary market. The services of a domain broker can be very handy if you opt to go this route;
* Consider names that are more in keeping with the nature, positioning and type of business (such as Sole Trader, LLC, etc) being contemplated;
* Make a shortlist of the names and solicit the opinion of family, trusted friends and business partners.
* Consider and use the Internet or other resources to check on trademarks;
* Check to ensure that potential names or close alternatives have not already been registered;
* Once you have decided on a name, make arrangements to have the name officially registered. Normally the names can be reserved for set period. The domain name version of the company name should also be registered as soon as possible to avoid losing out to another registrant.
