How retirees can cut home heating costs

When becoming a retiree, your life will usually change in an assortment of ways. There are many new ideas and lifestyle changes to consider and incorporate into your new position. One of the challenges can be coping with your pension, which often leaves you less spare money resulting in a need to check what you are spending. Finding ways to save money in some areas of your life can lead to fully enjoying the pleasures in other areas. For example, if you have lessened your energy bill, you might be able to afford a weekly trip out to dine in style. Finding ways to cut your heating costs can make all the difference.

One way to cut heating costs is to consider a different time frame. being retired, you no longer need to get up at the crack of dawn and warm up before dashing off to work. Staying in bed a little longer can thus benefit you in that you may not need to turn on the heating as early as you would before, and sometimes the day can warm up before you rise, enabling you to skip slipping the heater on at all. Living the lazy life of rising at noon, can be a luxury along with a money saver.

You could try adding extra clothing layers and wearing boots lined with fake fur instead of slippers before turning the heating on. Although in the coldest of winter this may not be sufficient, some of those 'almost cold' days can be used for this method in order to save money.

One thing to consider if you plan on spending most of a cold day inside, is to purchase a sleeping bag. If you are sitting down to read or write, or if you war watching TV or playing music, etc, sitting inside the sleeping bag adds to your warmth without adding to your fuel bill. This became a popular trend several years ago and it is now possible to purchase a special 'sack' for such purposes.

Consuming a bowl of hot oatmeal or semolina for breakfast can warm you up from the inside, making you need less external heating. A hot cuppa can keep that inner warmth going when it begins to fade.

Try keeping active. If you are pottering about rather than sitting still, you will naturally be a little warmer. you could do a few chores in the cooler part of the day, so that when you wish to rest it is warm enough to do so without switching on the heater.

A pet cat that curls up in your lap will add to your own body heat slightly. Sitting in a blanket and wearing an indoor coat can assist to keep you warm. Do a few exercises or mow your lawn just before it gets to the warmest part of a cold day. There are many options possible to save on your heating costs.
