Making a simple Mosaic Birdbath.
Children of all ages are interested and amazed by birds. If you make a bird bath for them, perhaps they will get a closer look at them and they will also have had a chance to get mucky and make something crafty, as all children pray to do!
To make a birdbath you will need:
Oven bake clay / Fimo
Varnish
Grout
A Metal or China Soup plate (with a raised wide edge)
A Rolling pin
A Cloth
Plastic gloves
A knife
and a spatula
This activity will take a little while, but will keep kids occupied in the school holidays.
Firstly you are going to need to make coloured tiles for the mosaic part of the activity.
METHOD:
1. Using a rolling pin roll out the clay/ fimo to a depth of approx. 1cm.
2. Cut the coloured clay/ fimo into small square to form mosaic tiles.
3. Cook according to suppliers instructions.
ASK AN ADULT TO HELP!
4. Remove from Oven and leave to cool (ADULT SUPERVISION REQUIRED)
Adding the tiles to the plate.
METHOD:
1. Get your soup plate and put on your plastic gloves.
2. Use the spatula to put a layer of grout on the edge of the bowl. (YOU MAY NEED ADULT ASSISTANCE and LIKELY SUPERVISION)
3. Press the coloured tiles gently into the grout in a pattern you would like. But remember to leave a small gap between each one.
4. Leave to set for 24hours or as long as supplier recommend.
Grouting.
METHOD:
1. When this has all hardened and dried. You will need to add more grout over the top of the tiles and around into the gaps.
(This is to secure your tiles)
2. Leave to dry in warm dry place for 24 hours or as long as supplier recommends.
Finishing touches.
METHOD:
1. Now you need to clean off the excess grout with your cloth, use a slightly damp cloth and gently rub of the excess grout.
2. Polish tiles if you want to, to give a cleaner and more professional look.
3. Now apply a thin layer of varnish and leave to dry.
One dried the birdbath is complete and will look stunning in your garden or can be given as a gift to friends and family.
I hope the birds will flock to it and have fun dipping in the water?
