I actually think that an MBA is not necessary to IT success. I know you are supposed to promote schooling and all of that but for an IT worker a basic degree is usually more than enough. The proof of this is everywhere.
One good example is the fact that only a few executives among the 500 highest paid executives in the Standards & Poor's 100-stock index, an industry yardstick. An MBA might get you that one promotion but just focusing on your energy into improving your knowledge base in practical applications could get you further than that.
It is usually not even a requirement for those seeking a top tier job at a company. BusinessWeek magazine found that less than one fourth of all business executives had an MBA. Many of those who did said they did not think it helped them. To some this may seem amazing, but advancements of made based on your application of knowledge and not proof of it.
That is not to say than an MBA is a bad idea. Surely when you reach the top the effort will have been worth it. This is one of the most important ways to truly master the subtle nuances of business and a great educational tool. It might get you promoted in and of itself, but it can only take you so far.
So I would say that the decision is up to you but if it is going to really tax you maybe you should just ask your top tier managers whether or not they have one. Their answers will most likely surprise you. Only do it if you have the time and inclination.
