I play Winbolo. I bet you've never even heard of it. How about just plain Bolo? No? Not that either. Well, no big surprise there. It's a 2D tank game that hasn't been upgraded since it was designed in the early 90's. Yet, somehow, there is still a community of players - and though it ebbs and flows in number - it has been largely stable since I rejoined almost two years ago!
What I like about Winbolo is that it is so simple. Yes, it is two-dimensional. Yes, it has simple graphics. Yes, it sounds unexciting. But. There is still infinite possible variation within the game. It is kind of like chess: a very simple board, but more moves than you can imagine. Once you get even rudimentary skills at the game you become able to recognize talent. And once you recognize talent it is like watching theater or some other performance art.
So, why am I a PC gamer? Because although I've played (and love) console games like Halo (and Halo 2) there is just something fundamental and pure about a 2D game I can play on my computer between other tasks. As I've cut down on bad habits (like smoking) I find it a relaxing way to kick back and relax during the day. Frankly, Halo (to use the same example) is great but it means more commitment - Winbolo I just log on, drive around, have some fun and put it back down!
