The effects of chemicals used on coffee crops

If Starbucks addicts were only more aware of the damage that rampaging demand for high-quality coffee has done to coffee-growing regions across the world, they would feel guilty about more than the calories in their lattes. The use of chemicals to coax more production out of low-quality soils and short growing seasons is doing incredible damage to areas that have subsisted for centuries on low-impact, low-intensity farming. Combined with the damage to water supplies that people are drinking, the coffee craze is doing significant harm to mountain highlands in many Latin American countries.

What can you do about it? Insist on having your favorite coffee supplier sell Organic coffee, and then do online research to ensure that the supplier is telling hte truth. Many reputable groups are pushing for expanding the production of Organic coffee, and they are making inroads in a very 21st-century way: through online publicity.

You can be part of the solution, instead of being part of the problem.
