There are two main parts to traveling cheap. The travel itself and the accommodations once you get there.
As for how to get to your destination I recommend driving there in your car. That is generally the cheapest way to get somewhere. It does take time, and you can't get to everywhere, but you can get to a lot of great destination by car.
If you want to or have to fly there are a lot of great websites that will help you on your way. If your schedule is flexible, then try being on standby. You can get great rates when the plane is half empty two hours before takeoff.
Don't forget all of those frequent flier miles that you can get when you use credit cards, this also might be a time that they will come in handy.
Once you are at your destination, try camping. Camping is very cheap and is an adventure in it's self. If you can't camp where you want to go, or when you want to go, then check our online for great deals on hotels.
Some chains have frequent guest programs that will offer you reduced rates if you travel often.
