My grandmother gave me this recipe for fruit salad by mistake once when she meant to hand me a shopping list. The family laughs about it now, but its a damn fine recipe which I reveal to you with some trepidation.
Serves 6 - or 4 really hungry people.
INGREDIENTS:
2 peaches or nectarines, peeled, stone removed and chopped to 1 inch or so chunks
2 oranges sliced in grandma's secret way*
2 dessert apples peeled, cored and diced
1 mango peeled and sliced (I've added this - granny wil be turning as I write)
1 can of pineapple chunks in real juice or a pineapple peeled and chopped
About 1/2 lb seedless green sliced in quarters - and skinned if you are patient.
About 1/4 cup granulated sugar to taste
Juice of one lime or 1/2 lemon if you are limeless
SPECIAL INGREDIENTS
1/2 teaspoon of ground Cinnamon
1 teaspoon of ground ginger
A few leaves of fresh mint as a finishing touch
OPTIONAL INGREDIENTS
You can add three bananas, peeled and chopped, but only if you plan to serve very soon after you prepare everything, otherwise they can mess everything up
PREPARATION:
Cut it all up as prescribed. Chuck in a bowl, and as we say, it's done.
*granny's special orange technique. First skin the orange - this involves removing skin and pith. Run your knife around the orange so that ust orange stuff remains, then keep running it round in a bout 1/2 inch slices each time, always ensuring that the bitter pith is removed. Then remove the orange slices by slicing between the husk of each slice so that you just get succulent orange and no chewy bits.
Don't tell granny I told you.
