Let me begin by offering my deepest sympathy to the family, friends and community of Virginian Tech. May god give them strength.
When I first heard about the shooting it was being reported that two people had been killed and the gunman was still on the loose. I was sad and angry at the same time, the question about how this could happen on a college campus kept coming up in my mind. Living on campus of a large University, I felt scared "what if this happens here?" I asked myself.
I knew I was too disturbed to get back to work right away, so I just turned on the TV and sat on the couch with a cup of coffee. It was around 8.
Then about 2 or three hours later, when I was trying to gain my focus and start working, I saw on CNN.com that 22 people were killed. That was it.
My heart sank and my anger just came out. I screamed out against the National Rifle Association (NRA) for being such supporter of guns. I blamed them for encouraging this culture of violence and guns. Why can't they support peace as strongly as they support guns? I bet we would have a better world with peace. But then peace does not sell and does not make money.
I cursed the gunman too, and all the Senators and people in power who oppose gun control. Senator Jim Webb, who recently has proudly declared his pride in carrying guns and protecting himself and his family kept coming back in my mind. What does he think now? Do we need more guns in this country?
I hope that in moments of great tragedy, we will be able to think about the issue of guns and violence in the country and hopefully more people will recognize the need to take guns away from people who shouldn't be having them.
