Fan fiction explained

Do you love reading? Do you love writing? Well, if you haven't discovered it already, there is an online world that is your fantasy come true. I'm talking about the fan fiction world. Fan fiction is an enormous group of people online that are fans of specific books, movies, television shows, bands, and more. There are lots of fan fiction websites.

A general definition of fan fiction is a fictional story that has been created by building upon a previously published book, a movie, or even actual people such as band members. The fan fiction author usually does it purely for pleasure, receives no payment, and the story doesn't get published.

Fan fiction has many different genres as well. There are fan fiction groups for fantasy, mystery, adventure, comedy, science fiction, even sexually explicit content. Fan fiction attracts both writers and readers. Some members of fan fiction groups are both.

Not all fan fiction stories are suited for everybody. A lot of stories have graphic violence, dark undertones, and sexual scenes. Homosexual stories are also available on fan fiction sites. There are even smut stories on some fan fiction sites if that's what you wish to read. But be aware of this if you have children that like to read fan fiction.

The most popular type of fan fiction group is for books. The most popular fan fiction book groups are, of course, also the most popular books at the moment. Harry Potter has probably hundreds of thousands of fan fiction stories online. J.K. Rowling is one of the few authors that supports fan fiction. The most popular and largest Harry Potter fan fiction site is located at Schnoogle.com. This site is devoted solely to Harry Potter fan fiction.

The stories vary widely in entertainment value. Some are very well-written, while others aren't worth your time. Thankfully, most sites have a rating system. This rating system usually reviews both the fan fiction author and the fan fiction story itself. Most fan fiction sites also have short summaries, or cookies as they are called, at the beginning of each story. This is similar to watching a movie trailer and deciding if you're interested in the storyline.

Other popular fan fiction categories include Star Wars, Eragon, Lord of the Rings, pop music stars and boy bands. Some popular fan fiction sites are Fanfiction.net and Mugglenet.com. Mugglenet.com, as it name implies, is all Harry Potter fan fiction. LiveJournal.com also has an extensive collection of fan fiction stories.

A website with definitions on the many confusing terms on fan fiction sites can be found at squidoo.com/fanfictionglossary / . It contains a fan fiction glossary to help guide you around fan fiction sites. It also contains links to some popular fan fiction sites.

Fan fiction can be a great way to get recognition as a writer. One popular fan fiction author got enough recognition that she now has her own book series in national book chains. Her pen name is Cassandra Clare. She is publishing a trilogy series. The first book is already in bookstores and is titled City of Bones.

So dive into the world of fan fiction. Become a fan of some great online authors. Or hone your writing skills yourself and maybe fan fiction will help you get a book deal someday.
