The high costs of hosting the Olympics

The Olympic Games should be a great event of pride and prestige for any country that hosts it, but wait a minute, I said country; why is it then a town or city that is mentioned?

There is no city in the world that can afford to pay for such an event from its own personal city coffers. An event such as the Olympic Games requires a huge amount of money, as much as a country could have.

Yet, it is only the city that benefits. As is proving in the UK, the costs are already spiralling so high that the rest of the country is having to pay for a great deal of this preparation, but few of the country can actually attend the event - there isn't the room in London for them all! Add on top of this those who come from outside country to participate or visit the Games, and you have a lot of people, many of whom are not going to get the pleasure of being there but nevertheless are expected to pay for it.

In the meanwhile, as the years tick by, many people from around the country are losing out on charitable funding for other events and activities to enable the Olympics to take place in London.

London for me is not a good place for such an event. It would have been better if it had been placed at a central British city, and all people could visit with greater ease, more space could be utilised, and the London Airports would not be so overwhelmed as people go to other airports throughout the country leaving the London Airports to the remaining heavy air traffic, and possibly a much easier transfer from one plane to another. Cramming everyone into the London Airports will lead to chaos because these airports are already dealing with heavy traffic under normal circumstances.

No, hosting an Olympic Games is not a cheap event, and it will cost all of the people in this country dear. We are one of the highest taxed nations in the Western World and the way our inept politicians are draining our meagre national resources is scandalous. Unfortunately, none of our "honourable" Members of Parliament seem to know what the word honourable means. They never resign no matter how incompetent they are, and they are terribly incompetent. With politicians ruling the preparation for these games it is clear the money is already draining away and little is being done for it.

Perhaps we will be ready in 2012, but I don't think so. Perhaps a great catastrophe will hit the games making it impossible to be held. After all, 2012 is supposed to be the year the world ends, isn't it? That would certainly be a high cost for any games.
