An urgent need for reason, dialogue and compromise

Bruce Gordon's leaving the Presidency of NAACP is a tragedy for Blacks. Black leaders are failing the Black community by refusing to acknowledge what has been gained and addressing what yet needs to be done. Bruce Gordon is one of the Black men speaking out about today's problems and the needs of the Black community today. His becoming the president of the NAACP offered hope for a change in leadership and a change in attitudes, but the other Black leaders who are still preaching the victimhood song of thed 1960's to the Black community wou8ld not allow for change. So Bruce Gordon, a brilliant man and former executive for Verizon, decided he had to work from the outside with other Black men who are seeing clearly and looking to the future such as Bill Cosby and Juan Williams who is an Emmy Award-winning writer, radio, and television correspondent.

Before we can see the future clearly we first have to visit and understand the past. This must start then with thedefining the vast difference between racism and racist behavior. Racism is the beliefs, thought and emotions of those who feel they are superior to another person due to race. Nothing can be done about Racism. No one person, no action on the part of an organization, group or even the government can do anything at all to change racism. People themselves must change their beliefs; must want to change their beliefs.

Racist Behavior on the other hand can be changed and the change can be and now is, enforced thru federal and state laws. Society via the federal and state laws that were passed had done all that could be done collectively. Racist behaviors could be prosecuted and the penalties for such behavior were quite severe. It now becomes the responsibility of the people themselves to use these laws, to bring charges against the perpetrator of these civil rights abuses. No organization or outside influence could at this point do anything that would effectively stop racist behavior.

I as a White female was actively involved in the very early stages of the Civil Rights Movement during the years 1958 thru 1963. After 1963 I still remained involved, but on a less active basis doing what I could by urging my Congressional representatives to vote for Civil Rights legislation not only for Blacks but for Women and all other minorities. As such I have watched the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) over the years and supported them and their initiatives in the civil rights struggles.
