In America the numbers and are far greater and the occurrences far more regular, one recent study suggest that 80 Americans a day are killed by guns, almost 12 of which are under the age of 16. This is a truly horrific statistic and one which American lawmakers must do more to address.
After the Columbine tragedy in 1999 it was thought that legislation would be stiffened making it harder for guns to be gotten by people, in fact the opposite has happened; legislation banning the sale of assault weapons has expired, special interests and political infighting have prevented new legislation from being passed and local politicians run with the fear and expectations of the gun lobby and its members hanging over their every campaign speech.
Unfortunately the sad reality is that again nothing will be done; in the next month to six weeks the N.R.A. will find reason to hold a convention in or around the Virginia Tech area, spouting forth their trade mark slogan of "from my cold dead hand!" (Will you take my gun) in an attempt to re-assure their members of their god given right to defend themselves. They will do this with fear as a weapon, they will tell them that the weak, liberal anti-gun lobby want them to be defenceless when the rioters and murderers and looters come for them.
The gun shows will continue where people can pay cold hard cash to obtain a semi-automatic hand gun without a back ground check, these back ground checks are designed to check the criminal record and any history of mental instability of the purchaser (as if actually wanting a gun in the first place isn't enough of a heads up as to a persons state of mind).
Finally though, the children, brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, aunts and uncles all across the country will continue to die.
At a time when the American government seems so determined to tell the rest of the world how they should live their lives, perhaps they should look to doing something about the reign of terror that is being carried out by their own people and going on in their own back yard.
