Celebrities and fashion seem to go hand in hand, more so now than ever. Movie stars have always had a strong appeal and people have been curious about them from the start. But it seems to me, people were more interested in the glamor they presented. The impossible and unrealistic image of constant perfection and ease in every move, every photo and every film they stared in. Now days, magazines are created that not only highlight only celebrities but feature pictures of them looking bad! The worse picture they can snap, the better. Kind of strange, if the appeal of famous people is their perfect, glossy outsides to distract us or pull us in to the fantasy land of perfection and away from our real jobs and messy lives. Why are we so excited now to see a picture of that famous person at the beach with no make-up and talk about how bad they look? And still, we are willing to worship at the alter of celebrity, follow intimate stories or gossip about their lives and yes, follow their fashion trends.
I admit, I fall in to this as well. In the check out line, I can't help but flip though the latest publication and sneak a few peeks of what's being listed as "hot for spring 2007". This is according to, of course, what the celebrities have been spotted in. Even though we know they got those clothes from a paid stylist who's job is to make sure the illusion of glossy is always on, maybe it's just natural curiosity that makes us look or care. Maybe because their lives do seem so effortless and pretty, if we can look like them, maybe some of that ease and happiness they seem to be smiling about will fall our way.
So I don't know if it's really about the clothes. Celebrities do influence fashion trends but maybe the why is more than just the newest "It" bag they carried at the airport or how expensive those sun glasses were after all.
