How technology promotes atheism and agnosticism

by Krom

Wow what a concept, most geeks are atheist. Whoever thought this article up thought as many do that religion and science are mutually exclusive. And they had good reason to think so. Judea Christian religions certainly seem to be at odds with what is scientifically accurate. The Bible makes references to the earth as having four corners, when it is in fact a round object. Geeks are often exposed to inaccurate religious beliefs, such as the belief that dinosaurs never existed, because the bible doesn't mention them. The bible refers to creation as haven taken place in less than a week. We know that the whole creation process took somewhere between ten and twenty billion years.

Now the argument from the scientific mind would be that one can prove without a doubt that life on this planet took billions of years to arise. The bible is clearly inaccurate on this. And if the information in the bible was given to man by god, then god would know that it took a lot longer than six days to make it all. And so to the geek the question becomes did God lie to mankind, or is God mankind's lie? The inability to resolve issues like these will often lead a person to choose to believe in empirical evidence over what he would consider blind faith. I would call this (empirical atheism)
Also people who are referred to as geeks often are not accepted into the social norm. This feeling of rejection could be turned around in ones mind. The mentality here is that if the geek is rejected by the religious norms for being smart, and different; then the geek in turn rejects the norms for being hateful and ignorant. And with the rejection of the norms the geek will reject their beliefs. That is not to say that the geek will not practice a faith of some kind later on. Many follow Wicca, or neo-pagan, faiths. And while it is entirely inaccurate, these unconventional faiths are often lumped in with atheism. I would call this form of geek atheism (social atheism)
Lastly many geeks are subject to warped and disturbing aspects of religions. Such as denominations that excommunicate members who use doctors and hospitals to treat illness's, instead of relying on faith to heal them or their loved ones. They often view the world of religion as being evil in and of itself. They consider the religions of the world responsible for numerous wars, terrorism, and oppression. And disgusted by their observations, reject religion on the belief that it is a very bad thing and we would ultimately be better off without it. I would call this (Moral Atheism); however I believe this last belief is more commonly shared by all atheists, and not just by geeks, or scientifically minded people.
I will conclude by stating that intolerance of atheism, or religion, is not socially healthy. Whether a person believes or not is not a sign of ignorance, or inability to have rational thought. To disbelieve is not a character flaw, and neither is faith.
