The worst massacre in US history leaves a university in mourning and many questions that may never be answered completely and satisfactorily. In a world where such suicide murders happen daily in Iraq and Afghanistan, it is still a terrible shock when it occurs at a peaceful American campus where young students feel safe and secure.
Early reports indicate the murderer was from China. What motivates a foreign student invited to America on a visitor's visa to turn mass murderer? How could such a highly educated professional commit such a horribly senseless act? Was it a previously unknown mental disorder? Was it a broken love affair? Was it ethnic hate?
The reasons could be even more sinister than the single gunman theory. The calm murderer lined victims up in military execution style before he killed them. Does that indicate he was indoctrinated to come to America specifically for the ultimate terrorist suicide mission?
The acts of the murderer are not the only painful questions. Could it all have been prevented by better security? The records show he made false bomb threat calls a week before his murder spree. Campus police now say he may have done this to observe how the police would react in an emergency, and make his murder plans accordingly.
Could phone tracing and other efficient investigation at the time have prevented him from further actions. Also, two hours before he killed the large group of students and faculty, he shot two others in another building? Could he have been stopped by swift action after the first murders?
A university family is in mourning, and every American joins them in their sorrow. However, there are disturbing questions that must be answered to prevent this atrocity from happening again.
