For the same reason as everyone else: a baseball player is a citizen, and citizens have rights and responsibilities equal under the law. Of course, this basic fact has been forgotten in many contexts recently.
Corporations and CEOs seemed shocked to be suddenly held accountable for incredibly devious crimes. Rock and movie stars think they can get away with public drug use and drunk driving. Even the very President of the United States seems to think he is beyond the reach of legal repercussions of deceiving our country.
If anything, we need to set *higher* standards for those in the limelight, who choose to make they money being entertainers, politicians or other kinds of leaders. Why? Because they are the ones our children are watching on television, the ones we are supposed to look up to with respect.
