Tips for parents who yell: Step-by-step recovery plan

Most of the parents, however patient they may be, loose their control at some point or the other. While the occasional yelling may produce the desired results but the problem is it rarely have long-lasting effect.

Next time you have the urge to yell just keep in mind the following:
1.Ask yourself why you are yelling? It can be just out of habit or may be you are just worked up by yourself and taking it out on your children. In most cases people who yell are the one who are being yelled at by their parents during their childhood. But think! Would you like to be just like your parents or you're your own way to handle the situation.

2.What will you gain after yelling? Your yelling may temporarily scare the child and he will cease doing inappropriate behavior at that time but does he learn anything out of that? So instead of raising your voice try something where you don't have to harm your vocal cords, for example, setting a time limit to do a particular job. Tell your child he has five minutes to collect all the toys from the floor and after the job is done shower them with praise. That way the job will also be done and you won't loose your cool also.

3. Remember that yelling won't make you feel good about yourself. You will start questioning your own parenting abilities which obviously won't be good in the child's upbringing.

4.There is a difference between yelling and saying something strongly and in stern voice to make your child listen to you. Tell them in a no non-sense tone what you expect out of them.

5.In case you yell badly at your child, apologise a little later. Tell them you were wrong and how much you regret your action.

6.In tense situations don't say anything immediately. Calm down by taking a deep breath or by slowly counting to ten. This will give you time to cool off and handle the situation in a rational way.

Whether one like it or not but children are going to do things which we don't like but yelling at them will teach them also to scream if they are upset over anything. So with the above given tips help yourself in becoming a calm and composed parent.
