A guide to basic tools for lawn care

Bearing in mind that when we had our first small lawn, and no money, we had the most basic equipment for lawn maintenance, namely a manual mower and some large scissors to trim the edge(Yes you read that right!), it does help to have a few more tools to assist your lawn care. There are a few basic tools which really are essential. Invest in these and you will make light work of keeping your lawn in excellent condition, without breaking the bank or your back.

1 - A Lawn mower. Which you buy depends on your size of lawn, budget and how long you want it to last. For me a good make, one that also has a roller and grass clippings collection box attached, with a blade that has a height adjustment, fits the bill.

2 - A Garden Rake or Scarifier. This will enable you to rake up any left over clippings. In Spring a scarifier(this implement has longer prongs, set at a wider angle than an ordinary rake)will enable you to remove all of winter's debris and achieve a better first cut.

3 - A strimmer and or shears. Essential to keep the edge of your lawn looking neat and good.

4 - A flat spade or the like to maintain a crisp, straight edge between your lawn and it's borders.

5 - A garden fork or an implement which removes plugs from the lawn. Either of these will improve your law's drainage and aeration. Simply press down into your lawn at spaces of about a foot apart.

6 - A Hose pipe or sprinkler system for dry periods. However try not to over use and impact on any water shortages.

7 - A supply of grass seeds and compost for any 'bald patch' repairs needed. You can buy this fairly cheaply, loose, by the weight, from many stores, however look for the best you can afford for good results. Remember also that if you are just seeding a patch, you will want it to blend with the rest of your lawn.

8 - A feed and weed product with it's own dispenser. Ideal for use throughout summer to keep your grass looking, green, healthy and weed free.

9 - A small set of hand held tools. These usually include a hand held rake, digger and a tool which can be used to remove weeds right down to the root. If you catch such weeds quickly they will not spread all over the lawn.

10 - A decent sized watering can is always useful.

Invest in the above basics if nothing else, and you will get results without bankrupting or exhausting yourself.
