to say, the idea was quickly disposed of, and the pilgrims turned back to the free-enterprise economic system.
Communism seeks to destroy the bourgeoisie, or the upper-class men and women of society. Communists believe that all men should have equal income. They despise the capitalist economy because of the multiple classes that are naturally formed by it. Today, any socialist would rant and rave about the horrors of capitalism played out in America, and the terrible rich people who oppress everyone else. This is not the case, though. In a free-enterprise market economy, the individual is free to rise above his current situation. With hard work and perseverance, anyone can accumulate wealth. On the other hand, in communist economies, the individual would not even dare to think about prospering through his work. The government makes sure that no individual is allowed to amass capital, and therefore have an advantage over his fellow citizens. This puts a damper on productivity because, again, it leaves no room for incentive. The government will take what you have and "redistribute" it.
The irony of the communist system is the fact that those who become the leaders of the communist state become, in a sense, the aristocrats that they despise so much. The government under Communism has the ability to take from the people anything it wants. And usually, the wealth that is taken is never redistributed evenly to the people. In the end, it is those in the government that benefit from the Communist system. The economy fails because of decreasing productivity, and the people lose hope because of the lack of incentive.
The very real truth is that Communism is alive and well today. In fact, many are attempting to discreetly implement Communism into American society. The more government interference (for example, Social Security Tax and the countless government agencies that plague America) the less individual freedom. Government's responsibility is to protect and defend, not to be a "mommy" so to speak to the masses.
To sum it up, the problem with Communism is, basically, the absence of personal freedoms.
And, conversely, the success of Capitalism is the presence of these precious freedoms.
