After the dot com bust, many people thought that caree in computers or information technology will not remain that hot and that the number of students in IT programs will decline.Well that did not happen.
Students still look at IT and computers to be a great career choice, and with success of companies like Google, Apple and Sun MicroSystem, they have reasons to be hopeful about their future.
So in light of this, if you have decided to pursue a degree in computers or Information Technology there are few things you should consider.
#Kind of degree program you select should match your capability and what you plan to do in future. For example, if you want to be a programmer, taking a degree which focuses specifically in engineering aspects will not help. Instead you should go for computer science degree with lots of classes on programming and logic development.
#You should spend time analyzing and studying your abilities and weakness. If you are not good in Math or logic, then being a programmer or applications designer is going to be hard for you. So don't pursue degree in engineering or programming but go for a mixed degree where you can get the technical as well as business side of IT and computer industry. I did the same, my degree is MBA in Information Technology Management.
#Your college or University also plays a big role in your future in the industry. Universities like Harvard are known for their quality education and smart students. So you will have an advantage in job market when you are student of Harvard. Similarly, looking for degree in IT and Computers, looks for University with a reputation in the field. For example Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, University of Illinois, University of California Berkley are excellent engineering and technology schools. Also look out for employment record for the University students. If your university has good success rate in getting students jobs then you will benefit when your time comes.
#It is important that you select your major based on your interest, capacity and future plans. Never sway according to market trends. The market may say engineers have better chances today and say something today different tomorrow. So stay your course and keep your focus.
#And finally IT and computers need lot of patience, hard work, dedication to succeed. If you are kind of student who has to have fun and parties in college and don't want to miss it, then this is not the right degree for you.Not that you have a flaw but just that you can do better in some other degree.
As a person who has a degree in IT, my suggestion is take time to study yourself before you decide. In my case, I got my degree with honors but by the end I was so dis enchanted that I decided to leave the field altohgether. So look before you leap.
