How to send a ringtone to your cell phone by email for free

Any search for "free ringtones" will lead you to a host of sites that supposedly offer this service, but in reality they offer only limited choice. If you want to be able to send any file from your computer to your phone, then this is perfectly possible if your phone supports email or picture messaging.

The best way to do this will depend on the phone you have and your network provider, but here are a few tips that should enable most users to get started.

1. You will probably need to edit your .mp3 file to a make it shorter and smaller - limits are typically 300k. If you are familiar with how to do this then just use your favorite software application and skip to step 2.
a. You will need a software application to edit your file - if you don't already have one installed then you could download something like WavePad to get you started.
b. Open your mp3 in your application and use the tools to get the file down to 30 seconds or so. When saving the file it's probably best to enable options for mono and a low bit rate of, say 32Kbps.
c. Depending on your phone you may have to change the file extension to .mid - probably best to stick with .mp3 to start with to see if that works.
d. If all of this seems a bit technical for you then don't worry, most sound editors aren't much more complicated than a word processor.

2. Depending on your network provider, you can usually email your file to your phone as an attachment. For example
Verizon customers can use yourphonenumber@vzwpix.com
Cingular customers can use yourphonenumber@mms.mycingular .com

3. Alternatively, you can check out:
http://www.funformobile.com/pa ges/ringtone/uploadRingtone.ph p,
or in the UK
http://www.free-ringtones-free -logos.com/
Both of which supposedly offer a free service - but you should check out that their terms of service and privacy policy suit your needs.

4. For the slightly more technically minded, you can get a data cable which attaches your phone to your PC and use a free application such as BitPim to upload not only ringtones, but wallpapers and the like.

This may all sound complicated, but if you get stuck, there will be a help forum out there for your phone - check the forum out for your phone and if your questions aren't answered there, just ask nicely.
