Bluetooth headsets are a boon to cell-phone users, and an excellent example of technology catching up to science fiction. The term Bluetooth refers to a technology developed which allows for information to be wirelessly transmitted between two devices. Your cell phone acts as a Bluetooth transmitter, sending Bluetooth signals over a special short wave radio frequency. Any device equipped with Bluetooth can receive your cell phone transmission - a computer, printer, or in this case a wireless headset. Bluetooth headsets allow the user to make and receive calls, issue commands to the cell phone, and manage their calls without actually having to use the phone itself. This is enormously helpful while driving a car, working on a computer, or any activity where the user wants to retain use of both hands while using their cell phone.
When deciding on a headset to use, there are several important things to consider. The first is compatibility with your specific cell phone. Your cell phone obviously needs to have Bluetooth capability, but since there are a few different specifications of the Bluetooth technology, not all headsets work with all phones. Check the phone compatibility list at the manufacturer's website prior to ordering a headset. The second is comfort. Since I wear glasses, I picked a Bluetooth headset that sits inside my ear. A standard headset, which would normally sit over the ear, would start to press on my glasses and hurt after a short period of time. You also might think about the differences in weight while deciding between comparable headsets. The third consideration would be battery power and range. You want the headset battery to last as long as possible so you're not stuck in the middle of a conversation without a headset, and you also don't want to have to keep your phone just inches away from the headset in order to maintain a decent signal! The fourth (and least important to some people) is fashion. Some headsets look strange, have funky colors, and otherwise might not make you feel exactly stylish while wearing them. If this is a concern for you, be sure and try on a headset instead of ordering one online. (Or be sure your online store has a great return policy). You also might want to consider whether the headset company has included accessories with headset, such as a neck strap or carrying case.
Once you have purchased a headset, read the manufacturer's directions carefully. Some headsets require a session of overnight charging before they can be first used. You wouldn't want to use a headset prematurely and disrupt its battery capabilities. If everything goes right, when you turn the headset on, and make sure Bluetooth is turned on your phone, the phone should ask you if you want to accept a Bluetooth connection from the headset. Say yes, and you're off and running! Some things to keep in mind while using your headset include staying in reasonable line of sight with the wireless device and making sure the headset doesn't run out of battery power.
All in all, the Bluetooth headset is a remarkable piece of technology, and with headsets available for under $30, also become an affordable option for many cell phone users. Keep an eye out for the cell phone users around you and you'll notice more and more people are taking the leap to a Bluetooth headset everyday!
