The importance of organizations such as "Men Can Stop Rape" and the promotion of such programs as "Real Men of Stregnth" has given men a better understanding of how sexual assault effects them.
Statistics demonstrate that almost 80 percent of men will have a friend or loved one tell them that she has been sexually assaulted. It may be a mother, a sister, a wife or a girlfriend, yet, whoever the victim is, it is clear that men are affected by this crime both directly, and indirectly. In light of these statistics many more men are standing up against sexual violence, and speaking out to other men about rape and sexual assault issues. The "Men Can Stop Rape" program is effective because it addresses the real issues, such as the fact that many more men than women are perpetrators of sexual assault, that stereo-types about women and men contribute to the factors in our society that allow for sexual violence to occur, and the campaign opens the door for men to speak to other men about the problem of sexual assault against women.
