Mysteries of ancient technology

Why are we surprised about ancient technology?

Well... if you have watched a football game you know the theme that permeates the contest: Hurray for our side

Our side is the best, of course, and those old people weren't smart enough to do what we can do today. Well.. they were just as smart as we are and they, not only discovered conceptual principles that have transcended the ages, but they had hard technological knowledge, they discovered electricity, intricate gears, and all sort of things that we only recognize by te end product. How did they arrive there?

Aha! thats the rub. The missing element was communication. There were no established lines and there was no incentive to do so as knowledge has never been more valuable as before the modern era. A Jeweler that could plate jewelry owned a mint.

Medicine forgot more than it knows - Daily old and trusted therapies turn out to be based on real science - only it was a private science. Thats the remarkable thing, that so much has been lost - The fire at Alexandria destroyed an incredible amount of knowledge when it reached the Library. Ancient technology is not surprising - is there waiting to be discovered
