This may sound condescending, but the best way to treat constipation is to prevent it. Honestly, so many problems will be avoided by taking care of your bowels. So here's a start...
Fibre is a wonderful substance found in fruits and vegetables and whole grain products. Your bowels love fibre, and it has a few hidden benefits aside from preventing constipation, such as leveling blood sugar levels (preventing those nasty peaks and troughs that can leave you feeling less than your best).
Fibre is almost powerless though if you aren't getting enough water. That old 6-8 glasses a day really wasn't a lie - your body needs water for all of its most basic processes. If you cells don't have enough water, they will take it from your intestines, meaning stools become harder.
Finally, exercise! I'm not kidding, simply going for a walk can help your bowels keep moving. After surgery, patient's are often encouraged to walk because it is one of the best ways to get the bowels moving again.
But if you are already constipated, you may want to try a soap-suds enema from the drug store. Its not the most pleasant process but it can be done at home, by yourself and there are no harsh chemicals, just a little bit of soap to decrease friction.
