ABC's of diabetes

I have had Type 1, Juvenile Diabetes or Diabetes Mellitus, for 32 years now. I am one of the lucky ones who has very few complications from the disease. I did have eye problems once I became pregnant in 1992, but other than having 3 laser eye surgeries, there are no "huge diabetic indicators." Actually, when people find out I am a diabetic and are shocked, I say to them "what...my neon sign wasn't lit up?" Want to know my secret? Attitude and never miss an injection. The attitude part is not letting people look at you as just a Diabetic. I am a Person who happens to have diabetes, but I am much more than just a number on a meter. That's a huge thing, because doctors and the like all want to know your numbers constantly, and if they're high, make you feel like you're doing something wrong. The injection part, to me that speaks for itself. However, there are some girls who intentionally don't do their injections so that they will lose weight (one of the effects of hyperglycemia). Also, some people are just forgetful or think it's no big deal to miss just one shot. What I've learned? IT IS A BIG DEAL. Diabetic bodies have no source of insulin to digest foods, so we need that supplement. Take your injections and keep a good attitude on life, and you'll go a long way.
