Marketing, Fashion Design, Neurology, English Literature, Political Science. The list of majors at most universities and colleges is almost perpetual. Reading descriptions of each major, let alone choosing the right one, is a complex and time-consuming task. As someone who is starting college next year and has been repeatedly asked what I plan to major in, I can empathize with those in comparable situations. There are many details to consider before selecting a major. Every student that is trying to decide a major should make a list of the top three subjects they are most interested in. If you can't whittle your list down to three, talking to friends, family, and professors can help you make those decisions. The most important details depend on what year in college you are in. While there are required core classes, freshman students have the opportunity to explore different subjects by taking elective classes in the areas that are on your list. By taking electives in the subjects that you might possibly want to major in, you can narrow down the list you have created. Sophomores also have the same opportunity to test out majors by taking elective classes. During the summer, participating in internships or jobs that involves your intended area of study can give you hands on experience in that particular field. If you are a junior and are down to the wire and still unsure about choosing a major, there are still options. An alternative to choosing a major right away is declaring you are "undecided". While this can give you more time to choose, there are some universities and colleges that do not have this option. Another option is to go to your local bookstore and buy a book that gives an in depth description of a particular major, the classes you will be taking, and the jobs you can apply for with that type of degree. A counselor or academic adviser can probably give similar information for free.
Just remember there are options out there for everyone who is searching for the perfect major. There is no need to panic or worry that you will fall behind. Take a deep breath, get out a pen and paper, and start on your journey to the right major. Bon voyage.
