Roughly ten years ago, you were lucky if you were able to find a monitor that could support anything above an 800x600 resolution. Nowadays, anything below 1024x768 is almost considered blasphemous to those of us who work within the World Wide Web.
Though, to get a better understanding of what resolution to design for, it might help to understand what those numbers regarding resolution of a monitor mean. Put quite simply, they are the number of pixels across and down (respectively). Pixels are tiny pinpoints of light that make up the whole of the picture that is displayed on your screen, much like television's.
What does all this mean for the average web designer?
Well, that all depends on your knowledge of design and coding. According to W3Schools, roughly 54% of people use a resolution of 1024x768. A few though, still use 800x600, while the rest are using resolutions much higher. (http://www.w3schools.com/brow sers/browsers_stats.asp)
All of this can be simplified with some slick and swift coding. CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) have now made it so that screen resolution is a moot point. Using CSS you are now able to make your website compatible with every screen resolution available with just a little extra coding.
CSS Zen Garden is an excellent resource for those looking for that flowing, simple yet complex, design that allows anyone to view their website with any resolution.
No longer are designers saddled with the responsibility of choosing just one resolution to code for. You are now open to an infinite amount of possibilities and viewers.
