Men's fashion: What your watch says about you

by Jon Coe

  • Writing Level Star

A watch is a time piece that can be worn either on your left wrist or on your right. I have seen them worn under the wrist and on top. Which either way, can explain many things.

The rule of thumb used to be; Never wear a watch on the wrist of the fist that you punch someone with! The lesson and priority here is, you might break the watch!

Years ago, there was a big joke; If someone is holding a drink with the hand that is adorning a watch and it is worn on top of their wrist...Ask that person for the time! Hoping that you are catching that person off guard, they will turn their wrist to look at the time and spill their drink all down themselves.

So, people evolved into wearing their watches under their wrists. In that same situation, if someone asks you for the time, then the drink would be spilled all over them!

I personally, cannot wear a watch at all. It doesn't matter how good or expensive it is, after a short while, that watch will never work again! So, if you looked at me, you may wonder where my watch is? Maybe, I wear it on my ankle?

I have noticed that a watch can make up for the lack of certain attire. For instance, a large expensive watch can be worn in a business casual setting, where the guy can wear a jacket, a tie, a nice big fancy watch and a pair of jeans. All of a sudden, you are looking at the watch and the jeans don't matter.

What about pocket watches? When will they start to appear? Perhaps a nice suit with a waist coat and a gold chain? Maybe, cuff links will be the rage soon?

I remember when it was fashionable to wear a diver's watch! People used to marvel at how many feet the watch could be submerged, before the pressure would blow it up!

We used to say, "I can dive to three hundred feet, before my watch will let in water", then someone else said, "Well, my watch can go to four hundred feet"! and so on. There are two statements being made here; We could all take a bath and not worry about ruining our watches and, we were definitely not deep sea divers. But it just looked good!

Is a watch a time piece or just another piece of jewelry? If you want to know what the time is these days, there are so many ways to find out. When you climb in your vehicle there usually is some digital invention glaring you in the face, or every time you look at your cell phone, there it is again!

I conclude; The watch has evolved! It has become just the same as wearing a big chunky medallion on a chain, or a nice gold ring. I am not criticizing the wearer of the watch, but I am merely pointing out that the motive for buying a watch has become less of a necessity for it's true purpose.
