There are many ways to improving one's English, but advising on these depends upon the reasons for doing so. Within this article it is the intention to provide a brief overview of the methods to improve English from two viewpoints, these being as a native or second language.
Even those whose native tongue is English often wish to improve on their language skills. In this case there are a number of ways that goal can be achieved. The most direct method is by ensuring that a wide array of reading material is used on a regular basis. Variety is important, as it will provide a depth and breadth of knowledge and learning. Thus one should read books, magazine, journal and newspapers, in the latter case make sure this includes the UK broadsheet papers like the Times as well as the Tabloids such as the Sun.
Communication is another way of improving English. Entering into conversations with many different people will help to build the vocabulary and increase your understanding of the different dialects and expressions that are used on a daily basis. Similarly, communication through written correspondence is a valuable tool in the learning process. By exchanging letters with other people you will gain a better grasp of the language as it is written in a casual environment. If you are exchanging letters with friends, perhaps through one of the numerous Internet networks, you may also wish to ask them to assist with your English development. These methods are particularly helpful if one is trying to differentiate between English as it is spoken in the UK, US and other areas of the world.
Many people throughout the world want to have English as a second language and are seeking ways to improve their understanding of it, together with their ability to use the English language both in the verbal and written form. All of the above options for English improvement are equally valid for those learning English as a second language. In addition, there are a wide range of self-help audio and written courses available, many of which can be purchased through the Internet in addition to local bookstores and other outlets.
For the second language English student another particularly useful learning method can be achieved by engaging the help of a mentor. They are many ways to do this. Firstly one could enrol with a tutor for private lessons. Secondly, there are numerous formal English classes being held at a variety of locations throughout the country you are living in, for example in schools and colleges. Finally, one could emulate what many Scandinavian young people do, and secure a job as an au pair within an English speaking family. In this case one also get paid at the same time as learning. A similar option to this would be to take advantage of an exchange programme, where you will change places for a few weeks in the home of an English student who may be learning your language.
As can be seen, the options available for improving one's English are many and varied, and there is surely one that will be suitable for most people.
