I had had a negative impression on feminists. I had thought that they were against men for being against men. Luckily, I took a class of Women Study in the graduate school and learned that I have been a feminist for all my life. In addition, I feel no need to label certain people feminists or certain movement the women's movement.
If you really have to get a definition from me what a women's movement is, I will tell you that it is a movement to promote awareness of the under-represented and a movement to improve status of the under-represented in all regards.
My male friends had got negative impression on feminists too until they accepted my explanation. Further more, they realized that they actually have been supporting some sort of women's movements since they were little. I am glad to say that the credit goes to education and the change of the society.
It is a society that promote the idea of being free to choose, and the respect from others who choose differently. When men are allowed to make a choice, fewer and fewer men feel the pressure to suppress women from making their own choices. Both genders can choose any color to wear. Both genders can receive high-quality education. Both genders are taught to think independently. Both genders can choose certain jobs. Both genders can choose a certain role in a working environment and in a family.
Of course, I observe that women usually are under microscope to be evaluated. And it is still true that there are double standards to men and women. However, the fact that the way men show respect to women has been changed toward equality. The trend is positive. Men gradually accept the fact that women are different and being different does not mean that who is superior to who.
Nowadays, the women's movement continues. The core of the issue is similar. Women want to be treated as a person, not a genderized person. (Men are looking for the same treat too.) Women are still fighting for the right of making their own choices. More and more women become advocates of rights of other minorities such as non-heterosexuals.
The movement is not named as women anymore or at least not explicitly. The reason is that people, including men, have understood that this is not a gender issue, but an issue that all humans living in the same society should care about.
