The Painter

Laying out the canvas
Looking into its world
The plain white paper
Having in itself
A beautiful world of picture

Is it a picture he sees
Or
Is it potential picture he sees
Nevertheless he gazes
Preparing to do his work

Raising the pencil in hand
The brush in another
His mind remains focused
On the picture or the lack of which
That lies before him

Should he disrupt the life already there
Interfere and corrupt that presently existing universe
The time and space the seemingly empty canvas has of its own
To destroy all the things which live there
Though with his eyes he cannot see
For the love of art and artistry
He cannot
He will not

At that time his child of two
Enters the room and ascends his lap
"Daddy, I am hungry," says the child
And with a stoke of pencil and brush
The painter begins a landscape
