Caveau de La Huchette Paris, France
I have been to Paris on two different occasions a couple of years ago. On the first trip I did all the typical tourist things; Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame and of course The Louvre. All of which are excellent and I highly recommend. Word of advice; give yourself two days to get through The Louvre.
On the second trip we did some different things since we had already been their in the spring. One evening after dinner we happened to find a dance club, swing dance that it is, that is in a cave or as locals call it the vault called Caveau de la Huchette. The vaults history goes back to 1775 where it was used to imprison, judge and even execute convicted criminals of the time. When you walk in before the crowds arrive you get a sense of the dark history the vaults have and the weapons hanging on the wall lend to the over all feel. But once the band setups up and people start to arrive the ominous aura is changed by the laughter, music, drinking and dancing.
The bar tender upstairs is as authentic as they come with an apron and a handle bar mustache. Not a traditional tourist trap of Paris, but if you are looking for a fun evening out, seek out Caveau de la Huchette and get a feel for what Paris is really about.
